Here is the history of the area and the villa:
Aubrey and his wife Muriel came to Spain from South Africa in the mid 1950s. He was a young idealistic ambitious architect. They first lived in Mijas where Aubrey was instrumental in bringing running water to what was then a desperately poor primitive village. For years old women crossed themselves when Aubrey walked past- maybe because they thought he was special because of the water, or maybe they thought he was the devil because of his beard.
In the 1960s the Davids (by now they had a daughter) moved to Estepona where Aubrey built his first urbanisation right on the coast- Villas Andalus east of Estepona. This group of “cluster houses” became one of the first developments of this type of community-living in the world. It remains much sought after property to this day.
He then went on to develop the much larger more complicated urbanisation of Bahia Dorada a few kilometres west of Estepona, where some 300 cluster houses are set in manicured gardens with six community pools also right on the coast . This development went on to become a showpiece of community living on the Costa del Sol. In the last months of his life Aubrey was proud to gain recognition for his amazing architecture, in that Bahia Dorada was declared a “Zona Protegida” (Listed Building status).
